"Karesansui" (areas without water) gardens reproduce natural sites without actually using water. These descriptive gardens create landscapes suggested by natural scenery.

From beyond the Japanese maple, spring water flows into a dry "stream" and runs through the surrounding gentle green hills (Kyoto, Japan) "Tortoise Island" and its partner "Crane Island", symbols of longevity. West Vancouver, B.C.
